About McAdoo Rugs

McAdoo Rugs ad produced by RSN TV, Mt. Snow, Vermont

The McAdoo Family began designing and producing unique, heirloom quality, handmade hooked rugs in 1972.  Over the years, from the company's mill in North Bennington, Vermont, this cottage industry has developed into a well-known and respected design company.

Our clients include Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Michael J. Fox, Kirstie Alley, Mary Tyler Moore, Danny DeVito, Norman Lear, Tom Selleck, Ethel Kennedy, Bill & Hillary Clinton, George & Barbara Bush and Ronald Reagan.

McAdoo Rugs works continuously to create new designs as well as to fill custom orders, ranging from a classical floral pattern to a child's drawing and even a giant fried egg.   The customer can also request alterations of the colors, size, or shape of the existing 600+ standard designs so that it fits into their home and matches the colors and sensibility of their décor.

The rug making process begins with 100% virgin New Zealand and English rug wool that is hand-dyed at the mill in North Bennington using Ciba-Geigy dyes, the most sunlight, colorfast dyes available.

Designs are then transferred onto a heavy cotton monk's cloth canvas (see Zebra example below.) In their homes, members of the community hook the rugs by hand, which gives each rug a touch of originality.

Because the rugs are made locally, McAdoo Rugs maintains control of the creative process as well as the quality, as no rug leaves the premises without first being carefully inspected.  McAdoo Rugs thereby gains the freedom to experiment with the color and design of each rug.  The result of this fluid process is that each rug is a beautiful and original work of art.

The rugs are durable beyond most modern day standards and can be washed in hot water and laundry detergent without the risk of bleeding or fading.  Should they fall prey to teething puppies, they can be sent back to us for repairs.

Our Mill is located at 1 Pleasant Street in North Bennington, Vermont, on the corner of Pleasant & Prospect Streets, right alongside Paran Creek.  We are the "big red mill", you can't miss us!

Stop by for a tour of the operation sometime, we'd be glad to show you around our beautiful mill, and perhaps give you a quick rug-hooking lesson.

This is one of the many waterfalls that surround us! The Mill is on the right.
